This one week intensive will explore the practice of improvisation and the art of Jazz guitar performance with a strong emphasis on practical applications for improving your technique, sound, time and musical imagination. Jazz instructor Mark Dziuba along with Grammy-Award winner Mike Stern will share techniques and strategies with you throughout the week. Participants will be introduced to topics of Accompaniment including; walking bass, comping ideas, chord melody and melodic harmony. Topics of Improvisation will include; phrasing, guide-tone line construction, modalism, pentatonic theory and application, chromaticism and rhythmic development. Topics of Technique will include; how to practice tunes, right hand picking, articulation, dynamics, muting and your instructor Mark Dziuba’s, “Blood On The Fretboard Workout”. Topics of Harmony will include; shell voicings, altered dominants, multi function shapes, basic and advanced chord substitution, chord defining intervals, modal planing and melodic harmony. Mark Dziuba Biography
Mark Dziuba has been a guitarist, improviser and composer for most of his life. He has performed with a who’s who of Jazz, Blues, Rock, and Bluegrass musicians internationally and has taught and performed at workshops for almost 40 years. Mark is currently a tenured professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he directs the Jazz Studies program. He was a part of the internationally acclaimed National Guitar Workshop for 25 years and has been a part of the Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival since its birth. He is a published author and has been a featured soloist on numerous recordings. Mark continues to explore the world of improvised music and can be found performing weekly in his area and abroad.

One of the most esteemed electric guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has distinguished himself over a four-decade career that has encompassed musical partnerships with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers and Joe Henderson, as well as 16 recordings as a leader (six of which were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards).
